What Happens When Your Prescription Changes
What happens when your prescription changes
You need new lenses. You do not need new loupes.
That is the whole answer, and it is only true because of how the loupes are built. Here is the rest of it.
The same event, two very different bills
Through the lens loupes
The magnification is built into a prescription lens. Your correction and your optics are the same piece of glass, so changing one means rebuilding the other. A new script usually means the system goes back to the manufacturer. Some take a removable insert, which is worth asking about before you buy.
Flip-up loupes
The optics sit on a hinge, in front of your correction, and the two are separate. A new script means new lenses. The loupes are not part of the conversation.
It is not a question of whether
Focusing up close gets harder for everybody, and most people notice it somewhere between 40 and 45. If you already wear a correction, it will move. If you do not wear one yet, you will.
Loupes get bought once and worn for years, which means almost nobody is buying them for the eyes they will still have when they stop using them.
How it works on a Hogies pair
Every pair we sell is flip-up. There is no through the lens option in the range, and this is the reason why.
Every pair takes a magnetic prescription carrier. Your correction goes into the carrier, in front of your eyes and behind the optics, and when your script moves you have new lenses put into it. If where you work allows it, you can wear the loupes over your own glasses instead. Either way nothing goes back to a factory and the loupes stay exactly as they are.
The support cord carries almost all of the weight, so there is almost no pressure on the nose bridge and no red marks. That holds whether you are wearing them through a full day chairside or through a long case.
And if the magnification or the working distance turns out to be wrong
Those are the other two numbers you commit to before you have properly worn the things, and they are the two people are most afraid of getting wrong.
If the magnification is not what you needed, we change it. If the working distance does not suit you once you have been working in them, we change that too. How it happens depends on where you are, so talk to us and we will work it out from there. There is no fee and no window to beat.
We are always here to support. That is not a policy we introduced for this page, it is what we already do.
Six more worth asking before you buy
This is one of seven questions we think anyone should put to a loupe supplier, us included. The other six are here, with our answers to all of them.

Your eyes will change. New lenses, not new loupes.
On a Hogies flip-up loupe, a new script means new lenses in the magnetic carrier, or your updated glasses underneath. Nothing goes back in a box to the manufacturer, and the loupes stay exactly as they are.

When your script changes
Two ways to build a loupe
The question is not how a pair feels on the first day. It is what happens the first time your script moves.
Ground into the magnification lens
Over your own glasses, or in a magnetic carrier
Usually back to the manufacturer. You work without them while you wait
New lenses in the carrier, or update your glasses. Nothing goes back to a factory
A second pair, or variable magnification loupes
No need for variable magnification loupes. Change the magnification over on the same Hogies frame in seconds
Take them off, or work around the optics
Flip them up. The frame stays on
Drilled into the carrier lens. It cannot move
Adjusted to suit you, with each eye aligned independently
Every Hogies loupe is flip-up
Some through the lens systems take a removable insert, which is worth asking about before you buy. On ErgoPath, Hogies sets your eye spacing for you within a 42 to 70mm range.

How it works on a Hogies pair
Choose how you wear your correction
Your prescription goes into the rimless magnetic carrier, behind the optics. If where you work allows it, you can wear the loupes over your own glasses instead.
Flip down to work, flip up between patients
The optics flip clear when you talk to a patient or check your notes, and the frame stays on. Tilt the barrels to fine-tune your viewing angle, and change the magnification over on the same frame in seconds when the work calls for it.
When your script changes, change the lenses
Have new lenses put into the carrier, or update your own glasses. The loupes stay exactly as they are, with the same magnification, the same working distance and the same fit.

From practitioners who wear them
Purchased dental loupes. Very happy with their customer service (very quick delivery). Jason replied to all my questions/emails very promptly. Highly recommend, specially for students who are looking for a good, affordable dental loupes.
I can't work without my loupes any more.
I've been using my Hogies Eye Guard since 2014, paired with my loupes, and I genuinely wouldn't choose anything else. Over more than a decade of daily clinical use, they've proven to be incredibly durable, comfortable, and reliable.
Questions practitioners ask
What happens when my prescription changes?
You need new lenses, not new loupes. Have new lenses put into the magnetic carrier, or update your own glasses. Nothing goes back to the manufacturer and the loupes stay exactly as they are.
Can I wear Hogies loupes over my own glasses?
Yes, if where you work allows it. The frame sits in front of your everyday glasses and the optics flip down when you need them. If you would rather not wear glasses underneath, your prescription goes into the magnetic carrier instead.
Why does Hogies only sell flip-up loupes?
We believe they offer more flexibility than any fixed alternative. Flip-up gives you the flexibility to adjust as your needs change and your practice evolves. That is what we stand behind.
Can I flip them up between patients?
Yes. The optics flip clear when you talk to a patient, check notes or move around the surgery, and the frame stays on your face. Flip them down when you are ready to work.
Do I need variable magnification loupes?
No. On a Hogies frame you change the magnification over in seconds, so one frame, your prescription and your fit carry across every power you use, without swapping out the whole system.
Can the eye spacing be adjusted?
On MediView, MiniScope, MaximEyes, Keeler and Prismatic loupes, you adjust the interpupillary distance yourself, with each eye aligned independently. On ErgoPath, we set it for you within a 42 to 70mm range. On a through the lens pair, it is drilled into the carrier lens and cannot move.
What if the magnification or working distance is not right?
Talk to us. If the magnification is not what you needed, we change it, and if the working distance does not suit you once you have worked in them, we change that too.
Do students save on Hogies loupes?
Yes. Students save 10% on every Hogies loupe. Come and see us at Booth 37 at ADX Brisbane, or talk to us before you order.
How long does delivery take?
Loupe orders ship free worldwide. ErgoPath is set to your working distance and eye spacing, and dispatches in roughly three weeks. Talk to us for timing on other systems.
What else should I ask before buying loupes?
Prescription changes are one of seven questions we think anyone should put to a loupe supplier, us included. The other six are in our guide to the questions to ask before you order, with our answers to all of them.
Try flip-up at ADX Brisbane

Who's behind this
Why every Hogies loupe is flip-up
Hogies goes back to Martin Hogan, who started his optical practice in Melbourne in the 1960s. I joined the business in the late 1980s, and in 2003 we launched the MediView loupe system at the FDI World Dental Federation Congress in Sydney. The MediView frame won the Australian Design Award that year.
We only sell flip-up loupes. Your prescription changes, your practice changes and the work you do changes with them. Flip-up lets your loupes keep up with all of that.
If you are not sure which magnification or working distance you need, talk to me before you order. It is a five minute conversation, and it is the part people skip.
